When you can't be there for the birthday
You are the grandparent who lives too far to drop by. You know your grandkid is turning six on Thursday. You have known this for months. You have already sent something, or you are about to.
But sending things gets thinner year by year. There is only so much a package can do. It arrives, it is unwrapped, the wrapping paper goes in the recycling, and the toy is one of eight other toys. You are not in the picture the parents will send.
You have tried FaceTime. It works to a point. A six-year-old wants to run around, and running around does not perform well on video, and after eight minutes they hand the phone to a parent and go.
The problem is presence. You want to be inside the moment for a minute, in a way a box can't do.
A different kind of thing to send
Madejustfor.me is a website that makes a small playable game with your grandkid's name and their current interests inside it. You spend a couple of minutes filling out a form: their name, their age, the things they're into right now, the setting and mood that fits them. You sign it with whatever you'd sign a card with. You pay nine dollars.
A minute or two later, you have a link. The link is the whole gift. It goes into a text to the parent, or into your grandkid's own phone if they have one, or you can call them and open it together.
That last option is the one this thing was made for. The kid opens the link with a grownup they love watching. The game has their name in it. Their favorite thing is in the game. You are on the other end of the line, laughing when they laugh. That is closer to being there than any package will get.
What it isn't
It is not another app on their tablet. There is nothing to install. The link works on any phone or computer.
It is not a subscription. You pay once. Your grandkid does not get emailed anything later.
It is not big. It is a small, specific gesture. Small is the whole idea.
