When you can't be at the party
You're the parent. It's their birthday, or the school play, or the game, or the day. And you are not going to be there.
Maybe you are deployed. Maybe you are at a conference in a different time zone. Maybe this week is the other week and they are not with you. The circumstances differ; the feeling is the same, which is that you are missing something you very much wanted to be inside of.
There is no gift that fixes that. The thing you actually wanted was to be there. The gift is a substitute, and every substitute is worse than the thing itself. So what a gift can do, on days like this, is smaller than usual. Its job is to say: I am thinking about you. I am not making this up. I know exactly what today is and I know exactly what you are into right now.
The problem with the mailed present
If you shipped it in time, great. The kid opens the box, hears from you on a call, and is loved. That works, and if that's your setup, keep doing it.
But some of us didn't plan that well, and some of us can't plan that well, because being on the other side of the country or the world is unpredictable. What we need is something that doesn't have a shipping window. Something we can send at 11 p.m. the night before and know it will be there in the morning.
What this is
Madejustfor.me is a website that makes a personalized playable card for your kid in a few minutes. Their name is in it. What they're into right now is in it. You sign it however you'd sign one.
You spend two or three minutes filling out the form, telling us who they are and what they're into. You pay nine dollars. A minute or two later, a link comes back. You text it to your co-parent, or to their grandparent, or straight to your kid if they have a phone.
The kid gets a small playable game with their name inside it and a signature from you at the bottom. It is not a substitute for you being there. Nothing is. But it is evidence, in their hands, on the day, that you knew exactly what today was.
